Symptomatic Vaginitis and Bacterial Vaginosis Test

The comprehensive BV and Vaginitis test is for women only. This test would only be recommended if there is no possibility of a sexually transmitted infection. If there is any possibility of a sexually transmitted infection then you should have that ruled out first.

This test profile is only appropriate if you are symptomatic and have an unusual discharge or a red and swollen vagina. If there is an unusual odour emanating from the vagina then this test is also appropriate.

• What is included in this test?

  This particular test profile will look for the indicators of Bacterial Vaginosis and common causes of vaginitis, other than classic sexually transmitted infections, the possibility of which should be excluded before this analysis is undertaken. The test panel covers:

  • Candida and other yeasts
  • Gardnerella Vaginalis
  • Trichomonas Vaginalis
  • Bacterial and yeast culture
• How to use the kit

  Full instructions will be sent with the test kit and it is very simple to complete as we use two vaginal swabs - one for a culture and the other for PCR analysis. You simply take the vaginal swabs as directed and post them back to our lab in the pre-paid envelope. The envelope can be posted at any post box - you do not need to take the item to a post office.

• How long do the results take?

  This screen involves DNA PCR as well as a vaginal culture. The results take around 36 hours for the PCR swab but the vaginal culture normally takes 2 days to complete. We can provide interim results inside this timescale.

• Is treatment included?

  Treatment is not included free of charge on this test but any treatment can be prescribed at the normal private prescription price with next day delivery as standard.

Please note that the sample must be back with us within 3 days of it being taken. If you are outside the UK then you must arrange an overnight courier service.
